St Paul's Church, Huddersfield Road, Stalybridge  7.30pm start
  • Cornet player needed.

Glossop Old Band is currently graded as a Championship section band but are currently a non-contesting band due to shortage of players.  We currently have 14 brass players and 3 percussionists which form a well balanced group and perform regularly in the Bandroom and other venues in the local area.   We are looking for an experienced cornet player to join the solo cornet rank to play either ‘bumper up’ or principle cornet.  You wouldn’t need to register with the band and if required could play at contests with other bands but we would need commitment to one rehearsal a week and the concerts the band has booked.  The band rehearse once a week on a Tuesday evenings 8.15 to 10.00pm  Applications should be sent to glossopband@yahoo.co.uk or please call Janet Lewis on 07887 997374 for an informal chat.

Hi fellows   what a great evening I had on the 18th. I cannot express how much it meant to play in the bandroom again after so many years, but what a bonus it was to meet so many of my old freinds and to be conducted by Jonah, who in no uncertain terms has shown what a grounding in the fellowship we had at Glossop can lead to if you have commitment. I know that several of my contemporaries went on to make great names for themselves within the higher echelons but I am sure that not one of them forgot their roots. Mine started with Jack Fletcher who heard me during a woodwork class as I was singing Hi Ho its of to work we go whilst spoke shaving a curly end of a bookshelf. To see the man who gave me the love of my life ( Eb Bass ) because I could not play a 3rd cornet part quietly enough for the solo cornet to be heard made my night. If you read this Jack, Many thanks. News 2010

2nd Quiz Concert

A small, but apreciative, audience participated in the 2nd quiz concert held in the bandroom on 25thSeptember.  The questions were set by Wendy McMylor who also chose the music for the evening.

The evening was attended by Councillor Jean Wharmby who made a donation to the band of £500

Over £200 was raised on the night for much needed repairs to the bandroom roof.

The band would like to thank Jeff Lewis for being the Quiz Master (and solo trombone!)

Last Night of the Proms

11th September saw Glossop Bandroom host it's own version of the Last Night of the Proms which was a fundraiser night for St Mary's Church.  Over £400 was raised on the night for this worthy charity.

The featured soloists on the night were (Dame) Janet Lewis (Flugel), Stuart Wilkinson (Horn) and Tim (Benedictus) Dines (Euph).  The band also featured music from the 4 British Isles before finishing the concert with Sea Songs, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.  There was much audience participation throughout the evening and the audience managed to match the band in terms of volume and gusto!

A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all

Whit Friday - part 2!

The band are pleased to have gained the honours of being the 2nd best overall local band in Tameside..  This, together with the prizes picked up throughout the evening brings the band in excess of £1,000 prize money.
Hopefully this is a sign of things to come and the band is looking forward to the concerts and contests booked for the remainder of the year  (3rd June 2010)

Whit Friday

Despite the coach being over an hour late getting to us, the band still managed to get 8 contests in on the night.  Whilst waiting for the coach outside the town hall the band had their picture taken by the Chronicle photographer who spotted us waiting to go.

Thankfully the weather stayed good this year and an enjoyable evening was had by all.  The band would like to thank all the guest players who helped out and we couldn't have done it without them.  We'd especially like to thank Laurence Owen, who plays for the Band of the Coldstream Guards, for helping on Eb bass and hope he managed to get up in time to get back to London for Trooping the Colour rehearsals at 8.30am on Saturday.

Pictures and results will be posted here shortly

Quiz Concert

The band's first quiz concert was held on the 27th March in the Bandroom and was well received by all those that attended.

Questions were general knowledge questions based (loosely!!) on the music that the band had just played.  Soloist on the evening were Mandy Crowther, Dave RIchardson, Janet Lewis and Stuart Wilkinson.

Thanks to Jeff Lewis for being the host and Quiz Master.

Burns Night Concert

Glossop Band would like to thank everyone that turned up on Sunday for the Burns Night Concert. A good night was had by all and the band would like to express their thanks to June Cant and Betty Chaplin for organising the food.

What a good start to the New Year!

Midlands Area

Glossop Old Band played in the Championship section in the Midlands area and came a creditable 6th out of 12 bands. We would like to send a huge thank you to those players that came out of retirement for the contest. We couldn't have done it without you all!
