Conductor
Jon Davies
Jon was born in Walkden, Lancs in 1974. His love of Brass Bands was motivated by his late father, Derek Davies, who played for the famous CWS Manchester band in the 70's. He began learning the Trombone at school aged 13 but soon was convinced that his future lay on the EEb bass, following in his father's footsteps. He joined the Walkden band on Solo EEb bass at the age of 14 and enjoyed great success with his local band, winning the National Finals 3rd section and also the then prestigious Isle of Man entertainments contest.
At the age of 16 he decided to accept an offer from University College Salford to study for a Diploma in Performing Arts. Whilst at college he was approached by the Wingates Band and accepted their offer of Solo EEb bass in 1991, a position he filled until late 1993 when he decided to leave the band to pursue other semi-professional musical interests outside of banding. During his time at Wingates he gained a Distinction in his Diploma in Performing Arts and continued his studies at Salford University under David King, gaining a Ba(hons) in Band Musicianship in 1995, winning the Harry Mortimer prize for best instrumental performance in his final recital.
The influence of David King continued after leaving University as Jon accepted the position of Solo EEb Bass for the new Yorkshire Building Society Band. For the next 7 years Jon was part of the team that won 5 European, 3 British Open, 2 All England Masters and 2 Yorkshire Area titles, only 2 second places at the National Championships of Great Britain stopping him from gaining a "Full Set". This was soon to be put right though as Jon needed a fresh challenge and in 2002, after a brief period at Grimethorpe, he joined The Fairey Band and was victorious twice in successive years at the National Championships of Great Britain 2002/3.
Following an unstabling regime change at Faireys in 2004, Jon moved on to the Fodens Band and was immediately successful, winning the British Open in 2004 before resigning to become the Musical Director of the Glossop Old Band at Christmas 2004. Jon hopes to "Steady the ship" after an unstable period for the band and build on the positive and rewarding start that they have made under his direction. In his "real life" Jon is a Warehouse Manager for a Multi-National company, is married to Amanda, has a daughter, Jessica and is expecting his second child around Christmas 2005
