What's going on in the bandroom?

December

As at Friday 20th December Alison still hasn't had her baby. Listening to the band rehearsing Maunsell Forts must have put the poor thing off coming into the world! This will be my last update until 6th January and we hope all goes well for Alison and Gary over the festive period.

We would like to thank everyone that has supported the band throughout this year andhope that we can rely on your continued support for the coming New Year. The band wishes everyone a Happy and Prosperous Christmas and New Year.

The band played at Dobcross (15th) and featured a guest soloist Jessica Walmsley (age 4) on the jingle bells. Jessica is the daughter of Andrea (2nd Baritone) and the Grandaughter of Pete (1st Baritone). Our chosen encore for the concert was Troika but as Jessica brought her own jingle bells we played Jingle Bells instead. It was a successful evening for Jessica as she won the 1st prize in the raffle, a bottle of Whisky (for her Grandad!) and a kind lady in the audience gave her £1 for playing the bells.

The band would like to send our best wishes and congratulations to Claire Shepherd who is getting married this weekend to Phil Chalke from the Williams Fairey Band. Some people will go to any lengths to miss a concert!

Alison still hasn't had her baby but news will be posted her as soon as we know.

Congratulations to Mark and Sue Senior on the birth of their new baby daughter, Hannah. Hannah was born yesterday (10th) weighing 8lb and baby and mother and both fine. Well done to Mark for making it to rehearsal last night!

We are still waiting news on Alison Parker who's baby was also due yesterday

The band started their Christmas season with a concert last night (8th) in Denton. The band found out that this was the 19th consecutive concert in this venue and once again we played to a packed, appreciative audience. The programme included The Spirit of Christmas, Christmas Song, White Christmas, Du Bist Du Rue (Soprano soloist Mandy Crowther), O Holy Night (Euphonium soloist Jeff Lewis), Away in a Manger (Flugel soloist Stephen Roberts) Post Horn Gallop (Janet Lewis) and Trioka amongst many others. Alison Parker (3rd cornet) played at the concert despite her baby being due on 10th December .

The band would like to welcome back Gill Redfern on 1st Horn who will be covering maternity leave for Lisa Leggat in the New Year. Gill is the band's contest secretary and many years ago was the band's solo horn player (see November news) but has had to come out of retirement on several occassions to help the band out.

November

Having a bit of a tidy round the library the other night we came across a register that was started by the band 4th January 1981. This book not only detailed who attended buy who was late, didn't show and even a list of excuses. I've removed the names to spare blushes but here are some of the more amusing excuses (please bear in mind that the band rehearsed on Sunday mornings at the time)!:-

- Got up late and car wouldn't start
- Gone to police station
- Couldn't get out of bed somebody was holding him there!
- Because of potato pie supper a lot of people said they didn't know about the rehearsal
- Hangover

A list of players in the band at the beginning of 1981 can be found HERE Luckily (or unluckily) the register finshes in February 2002.

The band had a very wet Remembrance Sunday in both locations that the band play at. The majority of the band play in the main service in the centre of Glossop with a quartet playing at the cenotaph in Hadfield. The annual Remembrance concert held in the Bandroom (10-11-02) was well attended and well received by the audience. The band had several new pieces on the programme including a rare appearance by Pete Bowd (Solo Baritone) who played Herbert Clarke's version of Carnival of Venice. It had been over 10 years since Pete stood on his feet to play a solo and his comment to Jim upon sitting down was that it would be "another bl**dy 10 years" before he did it again. We'll see. Amongst the new pieces was the band's finisher, Neapolitan Scenes, arranged by Roy Newsome.

Now we know why Andy Pippen left the band, he is a shadow of his former self!

Andy lost 5st 6lb on the Slimming World diet and appears as Mr April on their calendar. Good luck with your studying Andy.
