Success at the 2008 Midlands Area

All our hard work payed off on Saturday 8th March, as we won the 1st section Midlands Area contest with the test piece James Cook Circumnavigator. This is the first time in 12 years we have won this contest and means we will be playing in the finals at Harrogate.

Middleton Band Concert

Conductor Matthew Stringer began the concert with the March
Barnard Castle, this was followed by the Overture The Magic Flute.
The first soloist of the evening Pam Smith on Cornet played "Share My Yolk which was then followed by "Putting on the Ritz" (Irving Berlin). George Gershwin's "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess with Soprano Cornet Soloist Louise Grain was followed by "Someone to Watch over Me" (Alan Fernie) and the first half ended with Goff Richards "Breezing Down Broadway"

The second half began with the March "Mid West" then "Ticket to Ride" and Adam O'Neil (Euphonium) performed the solo "Holy Well"
"Singing in the Rain". "Irish Blessing" and "Malaguena" quickly folloed and the evening was brought to an end with "The Lord's My Shepherd" and an "American Trilogy". The band was thanked for the great start to the Autumn programme of concerts and they were wished every success in the forthcoming National Championships to be held in Harrogate at the end of September.

Remarks from Senior Trophy

Ian Brownbill

Fine opening -the music has time and space and the sound has depth - well controlled playing. Timp a little "weak" into 5 - bass duet fine. Some good playing into grazioso - cornet just needs to relax a little more at 7. Good playing at 8 - good approach through to 9 - well balanced sounds -super euphonium. Effective into 10. Nice flugal voice - just slightly nervous(a pity). Lovely accomps and again well balanced sympathetic accomps to all the solo lines - well shaped. Tuning just waivers a little at 12 but the music flows. Thoughtful playing into 13 - just the odd blemish at slowest but the music has atmosphere. Fine at moderato - music has poise. Good at 15 - again the music has lots of space. Effective into 17 - not all detail heard however. V good at 18 - some dynamics - Thanks! Allegro has atmosphere and playing is controlled - slightly loose into 22 and again well controlled playing into 25 - but side drum not really convincing -closing bars have impact.
A performance with lots of merit - a VERY musical approach throughout. Thank you.

James Scott

A very good opening - with attention to detail and balance. Basses manage 5 well, and there is space given after this, where there are many good moments of ensemble. 8 splendid and shapely playing cornet, and this continues with some detailed band playing. Well done flugal at lento, and the accompaniment is well balanced. At 12 cornets are not quite in tune(in melodic line) - but I like the flow in phrasing that is achieved. 13 quite well managed, even if there is a hint of uneasiness. The moderato begins well, and space is given to allow clarity, and the changes in momentum are achieved well. Only the odd moment of unease before 22 - but generally you have very good control of the final pages of the score.
A performance that had much to commend - and well well directed.
