  • Cornet player needed.

Glossop Old Band is currently graded as a Championship section band but are currently a non-contesting band due to shortage of players.  We currently have 14 brass players and 3 percussionists which form a well balanced group and perform regularly in the Bandroom and other venues in the local area.   We are looking for an experienced cornet player to join the solo cornet rank to play either ‘bumper up’ or principle cornet.  You wouldn’t need to register with the band and if required could play at contests with other bands but we would need commitment to one rehearsal a week and the concerts the band has booked.  The band rehearse once a week on a Tuesday evenings 8.15 to 10.00pm  Applications should be sent to glossopband@yahoo.co.uk or please call Janet Lewis on 07887 997374 for an informal chat.

Hi fellows   what a great evening I had on the 18th. I cannot express how much it meant to play in the bandroom again after so many years, but what a bonus it was to meet so many of my old freinds and to be conducted by Jonah, who in no uncertain terms has shown what a grounding in the fellowship we had at Glossop can lead to if you have commitment. I know that several of my contemporaries went on to make great names for themselves within the higher echelons but I am sure that not one of them forgot their roots. Mine started with Jack Fletcher who heard me during a woodwork class as I was singing Hi Ho its of to work we go whilst spoke shaving a curly end of a bookshelf. To see the man who gave me the love of my life ( Eb Bass ) because I could not play a 3rd cornet part quietly enough for the solo cornet to be heard made my night. If you read this Jack, Many thanks. CALLING ALL FORMER PLAYERS WITH GLOSSOP OLD BAND

Have you ever been a playing member of Glossop Old Band?

Are you free and available on Sunday 18th December?   Then this message is for you.
GLOSSOP OLD BAND have secured the services for their Christmas Concert this year at their bandroom in Wood Street, of a conductor who is undoubtedly among the finest in this country, if not the world.   I refer to the current Senior Director of Music of the Household Division and Director of Music to the Coldstream Guards, Lt. Colonel Graham Jones MBE.www.gojonesmusic.com

Graham Jones’ early interest in music was encouraged while a pupil of Glossopdale College and he furthered this interest as a member of Glossop Old Band during this period.

He began his military career studying the harp whilst serving as a musician with the Royal Artillery Band.   In 1981 he was selected to become a Bandmaster and attended the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall for three years during which time he was rewarded with prizes for composition and orchestration.  He rose through the ranks conducting a variety of Army bands and received a Master of Music degree from Reading University and gained his Doctorate of Music Arts (DMA) at the University of Salford in the summer of 2006. Among the more recent highlights was the wedding early this year of HRH Prince William to Miss Kathrine Middleton (now Duchess of Cambridge) when he Directed the Massed Bands of the Household Division outside Westmister Abbey.

Lt. Colonel Jones is now very much in demand as a lecturer, adjudicator and conductor in both Europe and the United States, where he has recently been guest conductor at Leigh University, Pennsylvania, USA.

The success of Glossop Old Band in securing the services of such an eminent conductor is seen as a great opportunity for any former playing members of the band to come along to the bandroom on the 18th December, not only to meet with Lt. Colonel Jones MBE, but to listen to the Glossop Old Band and maybe even to play a part in the concert.

One of the traditions of the Christmas concerts is for ‘guest’ players to come along to have blow and this year we would love to welcome former players to sit in with the band during the 2nd half of the concert.  To make sure we have enough chairs and music is would help if you could contact Glossopband@yahoo.co.uk and let us know what instrument you play.

Highs and Lows at Glossop Old Band

Following on from the high of their recent success of being placed as the highest overall Local Band at the Whit Friday marches, Glossop Old Band are sadly losing 3 of their young talented musicians to Higher Education. Sam Richardson (percussion) will be leaving the band to attend The University of Huddersfield studying Music, Anthony Newington (cornet) will be attending the University of Southampton to study Aeronautics and Astronautics and Adam Corbridge (cornet) will be at Lancaster University studying Physical Geography!

All 3 players will be missed by the whole band and the last concert before the summer break will be in Glossop Bandroom on Sunday 16th July where a concert with an American theme is planned to help raise money for local Scouts to attend the 22nd World Scout Jamboree.  Tickets for the concert are £6 each or Tickets £6 each, Families £20 (2 adults, 2 children) and includes a “Meat and Potato Pie”.  Doors open 7.15pm and tickets are available from  Julie Fawley on 07961 461855.  Fancy dress optional!

Whit Friday 2011 Part 2!

During rehearsal on 21st June Glossop Old Band were delighted to hear that the band had been elevated to 1st Local in the Tameside area as Ashton Band had been awarded 3rd overall.  This is extremely good news for the band who are looking forward to the final concert before the summer break on the 16th July in Glossop Bandroom

Whit Friday 2011

Glossop managed to play at all 11 Tameside contest on June 17th thanks to some fantastic driving skills by the band's coach driver, Viv.  It turns out that Viv is a former player with Mossley St Johns and certain was in the Whit Friday spirit as she managed to gain us some valuable time by overtaking 2 coaches who were dawdling at the traffic lights in Denton!  She also taught Dave Richardson the difference between a bus and a coach, just ask him next time you see him!

Glossop Old Band once again have been placed 2nd local overall for Whit Friday gaining 2nd overall at Dukinfield, best local at the Broadoak and 2nd best local at Stalybridge.

July Hoe Down

The band will be holding an American Hoe Down concert in the bandroom on the 16th July 2011 starting at 8pm.  Tickets are £5 with under 16's free and the entry includes a "Desperate Dan Pie"

3rd Quiz Night - April 2011

Again a small but appreciative audience turned out on a lovely April evening to participate in the quiz concert.  The music was varied and the general knowledge quiz questions were well received.  This is an unusual concert in that the band participate in the quiz as they don't know the answer to the questions.  This time the quiz was won by the Euphs and Baritone section.

Note to quiz master - make the questions a bit harder next time!

Who really is the weakest link? (March 2011)

On Thursday 10th March our star soprano player will be showing the “Queen of Mean” how it’s really done!  Mandy will be appearing on the Weakest Link on BBC 1 at 5.15pm and shows Anne Robinson how to march.

We can’t say whether she wins or loses but it promises to be interesting viewing.  Tune in to find out if Mandy really is the weakest link!

UPDATE - Mandy really was the strongest link as she won the show after being the weakest link on the 1st round.  Tut tut Mandy but congratulations and loved the wonderful marching display!
