What's going on in the bandroom? February Congratulations to Lisa and Stuart who had a baby boy on Monday 10th February called Sam weighing 6lb 11oz. Lisa was listening to the concert on Sunday 9th and baby Sam must have liked the music that much that he came out three weeks early. February got off to a good start in the bandroom with an excellent concert by the Besses o' th' Barn Band. It was a very varied programme with several soloists and a Russian section. The following Sunday (9th) the band played a new concert programme which was worked up in two weeks, in and between looking at the area test piece. The music was from films and shows and was well recieved. The band would like to welcome Graham Coy on percussion and Duncan Stephenson on Bb bass who both join the band in time for the Midlands area. Also we would like to thank Pete Bowd for agreeing (!) to move back on to Solo Euphonium after the departure of Jeff Lewis. Thanks also to Chris Robey for coming back to the band to play Eb bass for the area. January Pictures of the band can now be seen on the "meet the players" page. These are old pictures which may inspire the band to let me have new and improved pictures to put on the web. Hope you enjoy the "rogues gallery". 26th saw the band perform their annual Burns Night concert which was played to a packed audience. As usual there was lots of Haggis eaten and whiskey drunk which made the music much more palatable. The evening open with the march Scotland the Brave which was accompanied by the audience clapping and singing and was to set the tone for the evening. The audience, as usual, was very vocal and joined in at every available opportunity. The band featured three soloist who played Ye Banks and Brae's (Janet Lewis), My Love is Like a Red Red Rose (Mandy Crowther) and Ae Fond Kiss (Stuart Wilkinson). Saturday 25th saw the 18th birthday party of James Cant (percussion) who held his celebrations in the bandroom. James and his friends drank the place dry of alcho-pops and vodka. The drink of the evening was Gold Label with Vodka. James did, however, survive the evening and was fit and able to play in the Burns night celebrations. At the first rehearsal back (7th) the band was faced with some bad news that Jeff Lewis (Solo Euphonium) has left the band to join Wingates and that Trudy Osbaldeston (Tutti Cornet) has had to leave the band due to a change in working hours. On the positive side Jim Murray, former Principal cornet with the Marple Band and more recently a member of the Besses o' th' Barn Band, came to rehearsal to collect mutes that he had left after helping out the band before Christmas and decided to join the band on tutti cornet. Jim has been a friend of Glossop Band for many, many years and is a welcome addition to the front row. Glossop Band is pleased to announce that a considerable amount of money has been raised by the band during the Christmas period. On December 14th the band played carols for a couple of hours in the Arcade in aid of Glossop Women Aid. £114.86 was collected on the day and this was matched by HSBC. On the 29th December an All Star band performed in the bandroom to a packed house and raised £750 for the Patient Amenity Fund, Ward 27, Manchester Royal Infirmary . On the 5th January 2003 another All Star band (called "No-Stars band") played to a full house and raised £400 for Age Concern. The three charities would like to thank all the players involved and are extremely grateful that they were willing to give up their time for such worthy charities. Old News
