Whit Friday details can be found by clicking HERE
Ian Bowd (percussion) left the band in May to join the Williams Fairey Band. We are sorry to see him go but his is a well deserved move and the band wish him every success with his playing career.
Keith Lawson (euph) joined the band in May from the Dobcross Silver Band. Keith had intended to have a bit of a break from banding but only managed one week! The band would like to welcome Keith and the next round's on him!
On 5th May the band took part in the High Peak District contest held in Buxton, Derbyshire. The band played Whitsun Wakes and gained first prize. On the same day Julie Askey (2nd Horn) was presented with her 25 year service award.
4barsrest.com had the following to say about the band's performance.
"As we said back in March after they finished 6th at the Midlands
Regionals Glossop Old could have really been challenging for a top spot
so it was no surprise when they improved on that result with a second
prize at the Tameside Open on April 7th. Sunday 5th May 2002 was to be
a case of third time lucky when they took first prize at this contest
again playing "Whitsun Wakes" by Michael Ball. Drawn 9th of the 10 competing
bands the 191 points they received was a just reward. James Cant conducted
a performance in which there was no want for vitality or sensitivity with
every phrase splendidly alive. All the solo playing was of note in particular
that of the soprano, who when not producing some exquisite playing, was
leaning quite well forward in her chair (dare I ask the reason why!) Just
as an aside, their regular flugel horn player was unfortunately taken
ill just prior to this contest so they had to turn to another player for
assistance, mind you when this deputy happens to be Helen Fox of Fodens
it does tend to ease the situation especially with that cadenza waiting.
(Awards - The Brian Stead & Gordon Nelson Memorial Trophy & 200 [plus
200 donated from the Stead & Nelson Memorial Fund) & The Geoff Milner
Trophy & 50 (for the highest placed band in membership of the High Peak)
"
The band has a busy month this month with Buxton on the 5th, Marple Conservative Club on the 12th May, 19th May sees the band performing in the bandroom and 24th May is the Whit marches.
The band is looking forward to celebrating the Queen's Golden Jubilee with a concert in the Bandroom on the 2nd June starting at 8pm (tickets £3) and a 30 minute concert in Norfolk Square, Glossop from 1.30pm on Monday 3rd June.
