Old News

April

The band are pleased to announce some additions to the ranks.

Tanya Furness joins the band on the cornet section from The Poynton Band. Greg Knowles also re-joins the cornet section after a spell with Grimethorpe. Gareth Steele is a welcome addition to the Eb Bass section and Ben Gillooly from the Junior Band is gaining valuable experience sitting in on the Bass section. Jack Parker (11) has also joined the band from the Junior Band on percussion and is certainly making his presence felt. He can spot a football at a hundred paces!!!

Whilst reading the Oldham Chronicle, I came upon this picture of the bowling green at Dobcross Band Club. Let's hope that all passengers were OK and no one was injured.

The band are currently rehearsing for two concerts, one on Sunday 13th April in Denton and 15th April in St James Church in Glossop. The theme to both these concerts is music from the shows and we look forward to performing at both these venues.

Rehearsals have started in earnest for the forthcoming Grand Shield Contest to be held in Blackpool on Saturday 3rd May playing Tallis Variations. This piece will also be played at the Buxton contest which is held on Sunday 4th May. What a busy Bank Holiday weekend. Good job it's just a hobby!!

Once both these contests are out of the way we will be starting to practice the piece for the following Bank Holiday weekend which is the All England Masters, held in Cambridge, where the band will be competing for the first time.

March

The band played at the area contest on Sunday 2nd March and played no 11 out of 12. This was an improvement on last years draw when we played last band on. The band played as well as could be expected and were disappointed with their placing of 7th. The band's soloists acquited themselves well with some fine playing by Mandy Crowther on Soprano. In true banding tradition the saying "win or lose, have a booze" fitted well with several unscheduled stops on the way home on the coach! Thanks to the coach driver for being understanding.

The only downside to the day was the venue, whilst it is nice to play in there is little for supporters to do in the area as there are no shops, cafe's etc. There is only a burger van outside to get something to eat and drink. A better venue would be Buxton as all the sections could be held on the same weekend and is a nice place for supporters of the band.

4 Bars Rest had the following to say about our performance and had us placed 5th
7th Glossop Old – Draw 11
Conductor: James Cant

Glossop Old produced probably the best final section of the day. Good bass line and snare support complimented excellent flugel and cornet work as the music built to a vividly atmospheric final crescendo and finish. The other sections were clean in interpretation where the band emphasised the pulse of the music quite strongly. In a movement of generally quite smooth playing it was in the third section were a couple of slips were noted that was probably their weakest moment. Player of the day – Flugel
