What's going on in the bandroom? |
Old News |
October
The band performed at The Conservative Club on the 6th October with a change round on the front row. Janet Lewis is back on Principal Cornet and Dave Richardson has moved to Assistant Principal Cornet. The band played a varied programme which was well received by the knowledgeable crowd.
Well, it serves me right for putting it in print that we had a full complement of brass players! The band are sorry to see Andy Pippen (Bb bass) leave the band due to work commitements and we wish him every success with his study and his career. This now means that the band are looking for an Eb or Bb bass and enquiries should be direct to the bandmaster Pete Bowd or e-mail [email protected]
However, the news is looking good on the new arrivals front with the mini baby boom in the band. Gary and Alison Parker's baby is due early December and Stuart and Lisa's baby due early March.
September
The band would like to welcome Trudi Osbaldeston who joins the band on tutti cornet from Diggle Band. The signing of Trudi sees the band with a full complement of brass players with the only vacancy being that of percussion. This is a major step forward for the band as there was a severe shortage of players this time last year and we would like to thank all the players that have help the band out during this difficult period.
The band is now actively seeking engagements and if you wish to book the band please contact Denis Jevons on [email protected]
Sorry for the delay in putting up news about the Open but here is all the gossip from the British Open held in Birmingham on Saturday 14th September.
The day didn't start too well as our percussionist, Kate, was rushed to hospital early hours of the morning with severe stomach pains which meant that she wasn't able to play with the band on the contest stage. Our thanks go to the other competing bands for allowing us to borrow a percussionist from the band in front. This happened to be Brighouse and Rastrick and we are extremely grateful to Mark Robins agreeing to help us out. Kate is now OK and we are hoping to see her at rehearsal sometime soon.
The band drew 13 out of 19 and performed as well as we could and were
pleased with the bands performance. Indeed "Cornetto" from the
MSN brass band forum had the following kind words to say about the band.
" Congratulations to Cory of course, but also to Glossop because
I went in there expecting them to really struggle, but came out having
heard a very good performance which justified them being there. Judging
by the screams and cheers which were audible in the hall as the band went
backstage afterwards they were obviously pleased with it too! "
The band were, however, disappointed with our placing of 18/19 which sees the band relegated to the Grand Shield competition held in Blackpool in May. But we aren't on our own, the other bands relegated are Carlton Main and CWS Glasgow Band. For details of the full results and other comments see 4Barsrest.com
There was one lighthearted moment for the band (but not the player in question!) during the weekend as one of our more senior players happened to be locked out of his room during the early hours of Saturday morning without a stitch of clothing on! He had woke up and needed the loo and in a state of semi-sleep managed to miss the door to the loo and opened the door to the hotel room which promptly closed behind him leaving him on the corridor without any clothes on. He turned round to get back in and couldn't remember which room he had come out of and tried the wrong door which opened but was thankfully, for the person in side, on the security chain. The said bandmember then tried the right door but couldn't get his wife to wake up and was left stranded for many minutes in a compromising position! In case you are wondering who the player was, he shall remain nameless but does play a barking iron.
September saw the start of the concerts again at the bandroom after the August break for holidays. The band was originally to have been Hazel Grove band but due to holidays etc. the band postponed until later in the year. However, their conductor, Andy Hirst, organised a "scratch" band to play instead. The charity chosen for the evening was The Patient Amenity Fund, Ward 27 at the MRI where Phil Fox is currently undergoing treatment. A massive £600 was raised on the evening.
The concert was very well attended and lets hope that this attendance continues throughout the year.
